CakekitchenWe’re all about the underdogs at PopLib, so Day 4 of our 31 days of NZ Music Month is “King of the Underdogs” from the “Green EP” part of the recently released 4 CD “Winter of Discontent” set from The Cakekitchen.

Formed out of the ashes of pioneering early 80s NZ music collective This Kind of Punishment, The Cakekitchen is led by ‘head baker’ Graeme Jefferies.

“Winter of Discontent” is an ambitious concept with 4 different sets of 5 or 6 songs on different discs, meaning they can be played separately, in any order, or as one 90 minute album set.

Not even going to begin to attempt to summarise the scope and importance of Graeme Jefferies’ singular songwriting vision and music-making contribution to the NZ underground throughout NZ and overseas, but the story told on NZ music history website Audioculture is well worth 5 minutes of your time if you are not familiar with this artist.
