Echo Ohs by Lucia Taylor

Following on from the previous post from Auckland garage beat-pop duo Na Noise, here’s the related Echo Ohs and “Fool” from their most recent 12″ EP “Wild Weeds”:

Echo Ohs – guitarist Guy Forks, bassist/ vocalist Yolanda Fagan and drummer Daniel Ward, with additional stratospheric vocals here from Hariet Ellis (Na Noise) – describe themselves as “Psychedelic cowboy music – lurching around psych-spaghetti surf sounds and goose stepping through spooky death-folk beats” which you may think would pretty much make any further descriptive commentary redundant.

However, it’s also an off-hand way to describe what is really a very satisfying full-range musical experience across the whole 6 song EP. I’m particularly taken by the characterful vocals of bassist/ vocalist Yolanda Fagan. They are played more or less straight on “Fool” but give a nice edge-of-derangement feel to some of the other tracks with whoops and shrieks.

Once again Echo Ohs take fairly familiar garage rock ingredients and re-arrange the atoms into something new and thrilling while familiar at the same time. “Wild Weeds” is available in splendid 45 rpm 12″ vinyl format from 1:12 Records.
