Our Day 6 song for 31 Days of May Madness, attempting to post a New Zealand track every day of the month of May, is “Heaven’s Gate” by Wet Specimen:

Wet Specimen are 2/3 of Dunedin’s premier aural assailants Opposite Sex, with drummer Chris Schmelz the odd one out. “Heaven’s Gate” is a wonderfully melodic slice of psychedelic pop with dark lyrics, a feature of Wet Specimen as much as Opposite Sex.

The track is from Wet Specimen’s first album “Wet Dreamin’” released in February. It’s generally a bit more restrained and gentle than the visceral blast of recent Opposite Sex albums, but everything is relative.

The queasy seasick dissonance of Reg Norris’s guitar, and dark troubled psychology of Lucy Hunter’s lyrics and vocals keep it Weird Dunedin.
