Khun Narin

Happy New Year! What better way to start a new year than with some music to clear your mind (or blow it, more likely).

Khun Narin’s Electric Phin Band is an ever-changing line-up of musicians from Thailand playing with ‘Rin’ and his electrified three string lute. “Show Wong Khun Narin” is almost twenty minutes long but it takes in so many melodic and temporal twists and turns it doesn’t seem that long at all.

The playing here is edge-of-the-seat stuff – psychedelic, exotic, hypnotic but never appearing repetitive. It’s a bit like an ever-evolving fractal image in sound, each pattern morphing into something new. It shifts tempo and time signatures in subtle, organic ways. One of the most perfectly natural and free-spirited psychedelic music celebrations I’ve heard.

The clattering, frenetic drumming adds to the intensity and urgent sensation, while the bass parts sound are a subtle kind of foundation, much in the same way Holger Czukay would underpin the music of German improvisational pioneers Can.

There’s an album here on bandcamp available as LP (yes please!), CD, cassette or download.
