Here’s day 12 of the 31 Days of May New Zealand Music Month bandcamp challenge. I saw Luckless at Chick’s Hotel last night and this song was one of the standouts.

Luckless (Ivy Rossitor) plays solo now, just using percussive guitar loops to provide the sparse rhythm backing to her guitar and voice. At times last night her voice (and lyrics) reminded me of Neko Case.

This particular recording also reminds me of Anna Calvi – probably also due to the smokey tremolo guitar and drums. But the use of loops creating layered textures of more experimental sounds in the background towards the end sets this apart and gives the song even more substance.

The CD version of the Luckless album this song is from is available on the Luckless bandcamp page and has an embossed Letterpress cover in case you are into desirable physical objects with your music.
